Making our house a home

Steven and I moved into this place 8 months ago. And for just about 7 of those months, our house was what Steven called a blank page. It wasn’t intentional. It was just, time got away from us. We’d pick up random items here and there with the intention of filling our home with quirky and colorful little details. But neither him or I ever expected this dream of mine to take off. I never expected to work day in and day out trying to make pretty things for other people leaving my home life and space to consist of, well, a bed, walls and all of our belongings piled in the first place they landed. It’s amazing how fast life is passing us by right now. It’s been so simple to miss all the little happenings in our life, to sweep maybe every other month and to never make our bed. We’ve been busy to say the least. Obviously.

As with everything though, life throws you curve balls. Things that stop you dead in your tracks and you have no choice but to grab onto something, anything, that will help you stand still. A few months ago, that happened to us. And that’s when we realized it. I remember exchanging scared and confused glances with Steven. And that’s when it clicked. To both of us. Sloooooooooow doooooooown. I’m not gonna lie, it’s been crazy hard. But it has made us closer. And ever since then, we’ve given it a valiant effort. It’s made us want to make time not just for us, but for our families and our friends and our cat. And most importantly, it’s made us want to make our house a home. And although we are not anywhere near being done, the small little things we have done, make us smile. And that’s progress.

I’m not quite ready to take whole room shots. But, whatever. This is our latest addition. The middle print is from our wedding programs. The photo of me is from one of our random trips to the cliffs in Palos Verdes. The top right is a photo of some polaroids I took of Steven’s face. And yes, the top left print says word Left : Liberty of London for Target couch throw. Right : our little elephant made out of beer caps. Left : Dwell Studio pillow from Target. Right : from Z gallerie.
Left : C stand from Anthropologie. Right : handles on our entryway table from Home Goods. This is our other new addition. It’s gigantic. It’s over 8 feet tall and it’s a canvas of old records we purchased from Handmade Galleries on Ventura Blvd. Again, it’s so big but it’s perfect for our crazy tall ceilings. If you know him, Steven is a huge fan of music. He spotted this and squealed like a school girl. He circled the store about 23 times before I finally told him I’M buying it if he didn’t.  A wide shot of where it sits on our walls. And a brief appearance from our For Like Ever print. Left : deer head from Urban Outfitters. Right : lamp from Home Depot spray painted harvest yellow.
This is my next project. Figuring out what to hang above our bed. I’ve tried frames but I don’t know what the heck to put in them. I think I’m going to try a mirror next. Or maybe a mish mosh of whatever I can find. It may take a while. 😉
